Azeroth’s Farmer’s Almanac (Fish Farming)

Hey everyone,

It’s me again. This time I’m going to post new pages for my guide “Azeroth’s Farmer’s Almanac.” This is for all you true farmers out there that what to make the most of your gold farming profession. Today, I’m going to show you the best spots for Fishing for materials and secondary quest items.

Happy Fishing!

Azeroth’s Farmer’s Almanac Fish Farming

-Firefin Snapper
Needed for Fire Oil. (Alchemy) There are two great spots for farming Firefin. The first one is in the Stonetalon Mountains in the oil spills running in the river through the Windshear Crag. The second is in the Barrens at the boarder of Dustwallow Marsh. Keep an eye out for wandering Murlocks. The fishing level for this area is 50 and Firefin, Blackmouth, and Floating wreckage give Iron Chests fairly often with loot gear up to level 35.

[Average Price: 2.8 GP Per Unit]

-Oily Blackmouth
Needed for Blackmouth Oil (Alchemy). Some easy spots are along the Piers of Rachet and Auberdine, but the are not the most ideal farming spots. Your best bet is running up and down the coasts of Ashenvale to Auberdine. You can find an average of 5+ schools along this path and next to nobody farms this area, so the nodes are untouched.

[Average Price2.9 GP Per Unit]

-Lightning Eel
Needed for Stormchops (Cooking) and the Craftsman’s Writ (Argent Dawn Rep Quest). The highest drop rate for this fish is located in Zul’Farrak (11%). There is only one pool of water there, so it is easy to find. However, the drop rates increase dramatically during certain times of the day. The best time to fish, is between noon and 6PM (1200 to 1800) server time.

[Average Price: 1.8 GP Per Unit]

-Plated Armorfish
Needed for Craftsman’s Writ (Argent Dawn Rep Quest). Scholomance has the greatest drop rate, but this is yet another fish that has better rates at certain times of the day. Actually, make that night time between Midnight and 6AM server time. If you are farming for Rep, as well, then you couldn’t find a better spot. However, if you find that attaining access to Scholomance is a bit much for you, you can fish in Eastern Plaugelands, as shown in the map below.

[Average Price: 1.2 GP Per Unit]

-Barbed Gill Trout
Needed for Blackened Trout and Stewed Trout (Cooking). Mostly fished for hunter pets (they love this fish), the fish can also be sold for the cookers. The highest rate can be found within the Coilfang Reservior: The Underbog, but if you don’t want all that hassle of fighting for your meal (since you can fly now), then check out the Umbrafen Lake in Zangarmarsh.

[Average Price 4.7 GP Per Unit]

-Bloodfin Catfish
Needed for Broiled Bloodfin (Cooking). Not much call for this fish, but if you are REALLY in the need for it, you can find them in the waters outside of Karazhan in southern Deadwind Pass. On the plus side, Bloodfins do sell high, if not often.

[Average Price: 6.6 GP Per Unit]

-Crescent-Tail Skullfish
Needed for Skullfish Soup (Cooking). Same as the above (Bloodfin Catfish). They apparently swim in the same waters. Nice way to pass the time while waiting for your group to get together, farming for two different fish in the same area.

[Average Price: 4.7 GP Per Unit]

-Stonescale Eel
Needed for Stonescale Oil (Alchemy). Another fish that is best caught during certain times of the day. Drop rate increase from Midnight to Noon server time. While the Bay of Storms in Azshara may seems like the prime choice for farming, you’ll spend most of your time fending off local mobs. For a more safe spot, try off the coasts in Tanaris by Steamwheedle Port. If you are a Hordie, a more localized spot can be found in Revantusk Village Pier in the Hinterlands.

[Average Price 2.8 GP Per Unit]

-Deviate Fish
Needed for Savory Deviate Delight (Cooking) and Elixir of Giant Growth (Alchemy). The highest rate is inside the Wailing Caverns in the Barrens. If you fish near Naralex the Dreamer, then no mobs will bother you. Outside the instance try the Forgotten Pools (Barrens 44.0, 22.0) where the drop rates are pretty high and the mobs are of the lower levels of the Barrens in packs of 3 or less.

[Average Price: 3.5 GP Per Unit]

-Pygmy Suckerfish
Needed for Pygmy Oil (Alchemy). This is a favorite catch for most high level Alchemists. Best bets are to try to catch them in open water along the Borean Tundra (Borean Man O’ War Schools) and the Howling Fjord (Imperial Manta Ray Schools). Costal farming give you more area to cover for fresh nodes and less mobs respawning on you. In fact, some prime farming can be found off the coasts of Vengeance Landing in the Howling Fjord (stay near the crabs).

[Average Price: 1.1 GP Per Unit]

-Glassfin Minnow
Needed for Ethereal Oil (Alchemy). Another Alchemist favorite and another two for one watering hole. Decrepit Flow in Crystalsong Forest (18.0, 15.0) have a drop rate of about 55%, and is also a great spot for the Pygmy Suckerfish from above.

[Average Price: 1.8 GP Per Unit]

addition to previous post.. If you also happen to be a miner, during these non peak times, I can also farm silver and gold nodes along the Booty Bay area. I was amazed by the frequency I find these ore nodes plus they generally respawn several times which is an added bonus.

I have great success finding the Fish Finder Journal in RedRidge Mountains. I fish in the Lake… wreckage and fish pools spawn quite frequently.

Another great area to fish up the Fish Finder Journal is between the Cape odf Stranglethorn and Booty Bay. I run up and down this coast fishing wreckage and fish pools for boxes, firefin snapper and oily blackmouth schools. There are not too many mobs that harrass you as you fish so its *safe* for level 30 and above.

I fish all hours of the day and night but find the highest drop rate for boxes from wreckage pools is early am.. 4 am through 9 am… Consider wetting a line in the am while enjoying your coffee before starting your hectic day. Doing this for a month or so and then selling the stacked bolts of cloth, fish and stranglekelp via the AH…bought me my early flying upgrades.

I finally got the fish finder in Zangermarsh. I reached 300 in fishing and got the Scavenger achievement for all my efforts in trying to get the Weather Beaten Journal. So I flew around Zangermarsh and found a small uninhabited island near the Centarian Refuge and fished the pools and 1 pool of crates. I got a total of about 5 or 6 curious crates but was very distracted by the eels attacking me. I quickly opened the crates in between. I never noticed any journal. The next day I went to my spellbook to make bandages and saw the Fish Finder!!! LOL. Never saw the journal at all.

Any tips about getting the weather beaten journal for the fish finder? I went to the strands near Tarren Mill and went to the lake in stranglehorn but none of the crates dropped the journal. Any tips would be welcome.

At best, each crate only has about a 8% drop rate, so it’s going to be tough to begin with. Your “best” bets are along the banks of hillsbrad foothills. That includes the river. Fish near/in any floating wreckage you see. Pray to Buddha. Good Luck!

If you look at El’s Extreme Anglin’ site (www.elsanglin.com) you’ll find all you need to get the journal, and a lot more. Worked for me 😀

Real nicely made, will check up your prices in accordance to the ones on my server (Quel’Thalas EU). One of the big points of this is that the things from proffesions (Skinning, Herbalism, Mining and Fishing) that you get in a low level are the things that really make cash.

I like Stranglehorn Vale. Always lots of schools of fish ( firefin snapper, blackmouth) and occasionally eels and crates. The hazards are manageable for those 35+

I have one question. You mention that Scholomance is the best drop rate for the Plated Armorfish. Do you mean… inside the instance? (In the rooms filled with water.) I’ve never even considered fishing in there, if that is what you mean!

    Daknit Reply:

yes, but who really thinks about fishing while in an instance? Especially at those hours, right?

The Whole point of putting this is for the people who are having trouble finding the spot to fish them..
The price for this varies in different server depending how many people are actually farming it and selling….
overall this is very helpful and thanks for posting it…..

What’s GP? I took guesses at “Gold Pieces” or something, but those prices wouldn’t fit at all on our server.

    Reply

    daknit Reply:

GP Stands for Gold Pieces, yes. Servers will vary. The prices are an average over 6 sifferent Auction Houses that I’ve checked myself. If the market is small on your server, you can inflate prices to meet your means.

As for the Glassfin Minnow it is of my experience that the droprate is as the best along the river and in the poo in the other end.
